A gentleman, who appeared at Grand Designs during his church renovation, has suffered two heart attacks and has divorced since starting construction, but insists that everything is worth doing. Dean Marks feels that upset in his personal life is a small price to pay for his dream home. The decrepit St Martin’s 18th century church in Tipton, West Midlands is now a modern residential home and presenter Kevin McCloud has called his efforts to realize his “inspirational” dream. Mr Marks wants to change the former church registered in class II and turn it into a luxury home for him and his family, but the pressure from the project caused him and his wife to divorce and suffered two heart attacks.
He feels that the project is so tiring that this is the second possibility of a heart attack. Mr. Marks also had to undergo several surgeries to repair the bone and ligament damage on his shoulders caused by the work involved and being against testicular cancer. He also has additional pressure due to having to install CCTV cameras around the building while work is done due to repeated attacks from thieves and vandals. Marks bought the church in 1999 for £ 12,750 but is now worth £ 1.3m. Mr Marks has no regrets about the personal trauma he suffered as he completed his dream home.

Mr Marks used to live in a semi-detached three-bedroom house in Halesowen and although he did not consider himself obsessed with the building, he concentrated on achieving his ambition. Once he bought the church, he spent four and a half years persuading the Sandwell Board to grant planning permission to renovate it. He finally reached it in 2005 and can start working. He installed 11 miles of wires for electricity and over three and a half miles of pipes for heating. But the renovation bill reached a total of only 110,000 pounds. The house has five bedrooms, four bathrooms, a gym, a library and even an indoor pool. She uses old church benches left in the church and creates units in the kitchen and also incorporates original stained glass windows into the design.
The upper part of this property has a glass observatory that allows a view of Lichfield Cathedral, more than 14 miles away, if the day is sunny. The show’s producer asks Marks twice if he will appear in the program. The first time he refused because he did not want to be disturbed. The second time they ask him to accept it when he feels that they will give him more motivation for development. The filming took place for 21 months and aired in April 2007, this was the time he made his first attack. Later that year Marks became runner-up in the national Grand Designs award and spoke regularly on their Live Show at NEC in Birmingham. It just goes to show that if you have a dream then with enough motivation you can achieve it. Even if there are some challenges along the way. Equity in the house though quite astonishing.
